The main requirement for a terrarium is that it must have slots for ventilation, and at the same time the mollusk should not be able to crawl out of it. You can buy a terrarium without gaps if you are ready to regularly ventilate the house, watching the pet so that it does not crawl. For a short time, for a couple of days, you can use a liter jar with gauze stretched over the neck as a house for a small Achatina fulica.
The ideal permanent housing size for a mollusk depends on its maximum size. For Achatina, fulica is about three liters per individual, for a couple. about five liters.

Temperature and humidity
The ideal temperature for the house of Achatina fulica is 24-28 degrees Celsius. For heating, as a rule, use thermo-mats or thermo-cords that can be placed under the ground or under the terrarium.
In no case do not place the plastic terrarium on the thermal mat: it can melt. The best way out for plastic containers is to attach a thermo-mat to the wall near which there is a snail house.
An incandescent lamp is not recommended for use for heating. Firstly, direct light is harmful to snails, so there should be a layer of dense dark fabric between the lamp. Secondly, even a 100-watt lamp should be constantly on. only then can it give snails enough heat.
If you decide not to install a heater, and are counting on the room temperature for the pet, be careful: with a small drop in temperature below 24 degrees, the mollusk will simply crawl more slowly than usual. A significant decrease in air temperature and, especially, soil. will cause the snail to fall into hibernation, from which it is not so easy to remove the pet. Overheating for a snail is just as dangerous as overcooling: despite the fact that Achatina come from Africa, they are active in their homeland only in the cool of the night. Another taboo for snails is direct ultraviolet rays. Just a minute in the sun will result in a severe burn of the pet. The best lighting for a clam is soft, diffused. Therefore, it is better to put the terrarium away from the window.

Comfortable humidity for the snail is 70-85%. It is important that not only air but also soil be moist. Every day, about 2-3 times a day, you need to spray it from the bullet machine. Spray not only the soil, but also the walls of the terrarium: the mollusk drinks from them. The main thing. do not overdo it. If the humidity in the terrarium is above 90%, the snail will decide that the rainy season has begun, and this is fraught with a loss of appetite, a slowdown in growth and reduced activity of the pet.
To find out if you have waterlogged the soil is very simple: take a little soil in your hand and wring it out. water should not flow from it. Another important indicator: if the snail does not bury itself in the ground during daytime sleep, but hangs on the walls of the terrarium, it means that it is either too dry, or too wet, or unsuitable in composition.
Soil and cleaning
The best floor for a snail house is a coconut substrate with a layer of a few centimeters. It is good if it is enriched with minerals. In second place is the soil for orchids. In extreme cases, you can use sawdust fruit trees. An unsuccessful version of the soil for Achatina is a viscous flower ground. The main requirement for the mollusk is the friability of the substrate.

Parasites dangerous for mollusks can live in the ground. Therefore, before pouring the substrate into the terrarium, bake it in the oven. It is especially important to destroy parasites if your snail is young. adult snails are resistant to them.
The soil must be completely changed at least once every six months. In addition, the soil needs to be loosened and daily snail waste removed. Wipe the walls and the lid of the terrarium at least once a week with a damp cloth.

Each snail has both female and male genital organs. Occasionally, even a lone snail in a terrarium can procreate. If two achatines of equal size mate, then both mollusks can lay eggs. Young snails can only act as males. The snail retains the possibility of fertilization for about two years after mating, as it has the ability to store sperm. Sexual maturity in Achatina occurs in 6-15 months.
The eggs do not exceed 4-5 mm in size, and are similar in shape to chicken. At one time, the snail can lay 200-300 eggs. In total, the mollusk can make up to six clutches annually.
If you make sure that the temperature in the terrarium does not drop below 24 degrees Celsius, then after a time period of three hours to three weeks, snails will hatch in the masonry. The first time you don’t have to feed the snails. they will eat the rest of the egg.

Snails breed and produce healthy offspring only in conditions that are comfortable for them:
- with a varied diet of the mollusk (with cereal cereals, minerals, several types of vegetables and fruits),
- suitable temperature and humidity in the terrarium,
- the correct composition of the soil, its high mineralization.

Some breeders recommend placing newborn snails in a separate small terrarium and keeping them there until the shell is more than three centimeters. so that the baby does not get lost in a large area, he can find feed in time and was not crushed by his parents. You can increase the size of the house for a tiny snail as it grows.
Please note: in a terrarium for newborn snails, it is not advisable to keep live plants, mosses and driftwood. If you want the decoration of the terrarium to be safe for young animals, then opt for artificial plants and ceramic roots.
Snail care recommendations may vary slightly, depending on the type of mollusk. Therefore, after buying a pet, find out in which temperature and humidity it is most comfortable for him, and what other preferences he has.
