Fans of domestic turtles should remember that these animals require the creation of certain living conditions. The easiest way is to create an environment close to familiar in a special mini-room. a terrarium. Let’s learn how to equip a terrarium for turtles.
When buying a finished terrarium, you should pay attention to the material from which it is made. Terrariums from transparent shockproof plastic have proven themselves best. It is important to verify its non-toxicity. Plexiglas, ordinary glass and wood are also widely used. But in all respects, plastic is preferable.
Only one or two walls can be transparent in a turtle cage. It’s even easier to create comfortable conditions for the animal.
Terrarium sizes range from 100 to 250 liters.
The height of the lower side of the opening wall should be about 10-15 cm, so that you can fill the bottom layer and not allow the turtle to get out.
Best of all, when the front wall moves in grooves. This is the best solution from the standpoint of ease of use and reliability of the design.
The lower bulk layer in the terrarium has many functions, being the permanent habitat of the turtle. It must have, first of all, high hygienic characteristics. it is good to absorb liquid secretions, not to stain the animal, not to supercool it. In the bulk, the presence of particles with sharp edges is unacceptable. the wounds in turtles heal for a very long time.
Also, the soil should help maintain optimal room humidity, but not create moisture.
Many species of turtles love to dig minks, dig into the ground and, even, build something like a dwelling. Therefore, the soil should be sufficiently soft and loose, but not create dust. The best materials with similar qualities are: moss, large river pebbles, peat, wood chips.
It is not recommended to use small sawdust, especially coniferous, heavy soil, silt and sand, granite chips.
The decorative characteristics of the primer used are also important, but not predominant.
The thickness of the bulk layer is up to 10 cm.
In the natural habitat, land turtles spend a lot of time in direct sunlight and at high temperatures. Such requirements for terrarium lighting should be observed, and at least as close as possible to real conditions.
Therefore, the required parts of the cell are two lamps. the usual one, with a power of 60-100 watts. and ultraviolet. An ordinary lamp is mounted at a height of up to 40 cm. Directly below it, you need to install a flat stone, or a piece of concrete tile. They serve as heat accumulators and microclimate thermostats. Lamp light should cover no more than 75% of the surface, creating a shaded area.
The temperature difference between light and dark parts is up to 9 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature of the illuminated part is no more than 35 degrees.
An ultraviolet lamp is mounted at a height of up to 40 cm, but glass or transparent plastic should not be installed under it. they absorb part of the UV light necessary for turtles.
Species found in tropical rainforests. an exception. They require other conditions.
Bottom heating is not recommended. it can contribute to the development of diseases in turtles and the propagation of harmful microorganisms.
For normal heat transfer along the perimeter of the upper part and in the lid of the terrarium, ventilation holes are drilled.
For a comfortable stay the turtle needs a shelter where it can hide from a real or imaginary threat. As such a shelter, any hollow solid object, for example, half a ceramic pot, or part of a large drainage pipe, can be used. Often use special houses of industrial manufacture. The fantasy here is endless. The shelter should be located in the shaded part of the terrarium, you can cover it with green plants.
For feeding animals use saucers, ceramic bowls of various shapes and colors. it is important that the turtle can easily reach the food. Feeders should be placed closer to the border of the lighted area, but not under the lamp itself. Filling the feeders should be no more than 2-3 hours a day. this is enough to ensure hygienic conditions of feeding. The feeders should always be clean.
Drinking bowls are selected larger than the size of the turtle so that the animal can easily fit in it. From time to time, turtles should take a cooling bath. For turtles of aquatic and tropical species, a separate bathing vessel of several larger sizes is needed than a drinking bowl. The water in it should be changed daily.
Subject to all the above rules for the device of the terrarium, the turtle will be comfortable and cozy in it.
