How to choose soil in a terrarium
Soil consisting of peat, sand and humus, bark of coniferous trees, a filler of wood pellets for a cat’s toilet, sawdust, peat, sand, hazelnut shells or walnut kernels are always placed on the bottom of the terrarium.
It is undesirable to use pebbles: snails can fall and get hurt.
Before laying in the snail terrarium, the soil is calcined for about 10 minutes in the oven to kill insect larvae.
The main aspect in the design of terrarium for land mollusks is the soil. It has many meanings
- in the ground the snail sleeps, lays eggs, searches for food;
- absorbs and accumulates moisture, helps maintain constant humidity in the terrarium;
- softens falling snails preventing serious injuries;
- seeds and live plants are planted in the ground.
The soil must be moist, loose and safe (without fertilizers and germs). Coconut substrate, peat or washed soil from the forest are used to keep the African snail. Soil replacement in the terrarium should be quick and easy.
To do this, cut off the bottom of a plastic bag suitable for the size of the bottom of your terrarium and pour soil into it. Thus, to replace it, just pull the edges of the bag. Masked package snags, moss or dry leaves.
As a terrarium for a mollusk, you can use any glass (old aquarium) or plastic container that would have a lid with small openings for ventilation. It is preferable that the terrarium itself be of a horizontal type, its volume should be at least 10 liters, based on a 1-well large snail Achatina.
Of course, 3 liters will be enough for a small snail, but in order for the mollusk to grow and develop and not feel cramped in space, immediately take care of a large terrarium.
How to make a house for Achatina
The snail is predominantly a nocturnal animal. In the daytime, she prefers to relax in shelter or bury in moist soil.
As a shelter you can use
- half a coconut;
- piece of bark;
- half a plastic flower pot;
- driftwood and branches.
If your pet does not have the opportunity to relax somewhere, he will begin to stress, refuse food or fall into suspended animation. How to feed a snail list.
Creating suitable conditions with your own hands is not difficult. But before you equip the tank, you should study the basics.
In order for the African snail to develop normally, fresh air is required. The constant flow of air mass helps to optimize the humidity level. Therefore, fungus, mold and pathogens do not appear in the container.
To create high-quality ventilation in the container, holes are prepared in a certain order:
- On one side, the holes are centered below.
- On the other. at the top.
In the prepared container, the bottom is covered with a substrate. The lack of soil adversely affects the development of mollusks. After all, they use the soil to equip masonry, sleep, and other purposes. The soil acts as a shock absorber if the snail falls from the tank wall.
Before determining which substrate is needed, the main types are studied:
- Coconut. It differs in low cost, prevalence. Such soil remains moist for a long time.
- Moss. It acts as an indicator of humidity levels. Insects and midges never appear in achatin aquarium with moss in aquariums for snails.
- Peat. In its pure form do not use. It is mixed with other substrates.
- Flower soil. Most are humidified using appropriate equipment.

An experienced aquarist equips the tank with great care. He necessarily introduces such elements as twigs, vegetation, cones. Such elements are used by mollusks for shelter. Before placing the elements in the tank, they are fried, treated with boiling water.
Such vegetation as mustard, tradescantia, and fern are planted in the soil.
A container is placed in the container, which is filled with warm water. Using this element, an appropriate level of humidity is maintained. Such containers are used by snails and for swimming.
Not only natural, but also artificial plants are placed in a container with snails. Some aquarists use only artificial elements, since mollusks do not violate their integrity.
