Terrarium from the old aquarium

You can use an aquarium as a home for reptiles, even if the integrity of the seams is broken.

First, the glass must be cleaned of calcium deposits and dirt. This task can be dealt with as follows:

  • moisten a rag in 9% vinegar solution;
  • wipe the container several times to dissolve calcium;
  • after softening the deposits, scrape them with a glass scraper.

Repeat the procedure until the surface is completely cleaned. Then rinse the aquarium and allow to dry.

To strengthen the seams, they are first cleaned with a knife, and then degreased by wiping with a rag soaked in acetone. Next, you need to form a layer, wider than the old seam, using silicone glue for the aquarium and a plastic spatula. It’s worth starting with vertical walls, then going to the bottom.

At the end of the work, the aquarium should stand for twenty-four hours so that everything is dry.

The preparation of the home for the pet is completed by the installation of lamps and a floor covering.

For heating and lighting, it is possible to use lamps on clothespins. A lamp with a reflective layer for localizing light rays and a power of 40 W is installed in one of them, the second is needed for an ultraviolet lamp with 5 Hz radiation and a threaded lampholder.

The bottom is covered with a substrate for reptiles, round pebbles, sand, hay or a rug of artificial grass. As a decor, driftwood and smooth stones are used.

Plywood terrarium

As a basis for the habitat, you can make a terrarium for a land tortoise with your own hands from plywood that can withstand moisture. For these purposes, plywood sheets with a thickness of eight to ten millimeters are suitable.

First you need to make a terrarium project on paper, calculating the dimensions taking into account the thickness of the sheet of material. There are two options:

  • the bottom and four walls of the container are made of plywood;
  • the bottom, back and side walls are made of plywood, the front wall is made of glass or transparent plastic

For the first option, the dimensions can be as follows: bottom. 80 by 45 cm, walls on the sides. 43 by 25 cm, front and rear walls. 80 by 25 cm.

In the second embodiment, the height of the container may be higher. In this case, you can not use the cover and do not make special ventilation holes.

After cutting the plywood sheets, they must be sanded with sandpaper.

Structural assembly and gluing is best started from the side faces. You can fasten it with liquid nails or self-tapping screws, which then must be decorated in order to avoid injuries to the animal. Then the bottom is attached. Additionally, aquarium silicone glue reinforces the seams.

The container can be installed on five caps from plastic bottles. in the corners and in the middle. This will reduce the chance of plywood bending.

Further home improvement consists of filling the substrate or other material at the bottom and installing lamps.

The sides of the box must be at least thirty centimeters.

It is permissible to equip a temporary house with only one incandescent lamp, without a lamp with ultraviolet radiation.

The bottom is covered with an isolon (often used as a tourist) rug, and it is recommended to put several layers of warm material under the box.

It is important that such a terrarium does not protect the turtle from cold air, therefore it must be installed in a non-purged warm room.
