How Is The Terrarium

Terrariums for amphibians. For frogs, toads and newts, terrariums can be arranged differently. For more mobile animals, for example for frogs, spacious terrariums are necessary. The size of the terrariums, of course, is determined by the number of animals that it is desirable to place in them. For many amphibians, terrariums of about 40X40X30 cm in size are suitable. This terrarium contains several frogs or toads.

The terrarium has a metal skeleton made of tinplate or galvanized iron. Glass is inserted in three walls (one of them can be a glazed door), the fourth wall and the cover are tightened with a metal mesh. Often in purchased terrariums, the mesh is inserted only into the flat roof, which does not provide enough ventilation. Large entomological cages are also suitable for a terrarium. Finally, for the terrarium, you can also adapt the old aquarium, which does not hold water and is already unsuitable for repair. In this case, a cover is tightly mounted on the aquarium in the form of a wooden frame with a metal mesh stretched over it.

Consider the equipment of the most important types of terrariums for amphibians.

one. Terrarium for the frogs. Various species of frogs (grass, lake and pond) can be kept in one terrarium. Half of the bottom area of the terrarium of the above sizes is occupied by the "reservoir".

The easiest way is to make a baking sheet of square or rectangular shape, 5-6 cm high and put it in a terrarium. The rest of the bottom of the terrarium is spread with turf or moss, and some plants are planted in special pots. Such a terrarium contains several frogs at the rate of (approximately) 10-12 frogs per 1 m2 of area.

2. Terrarium for toads may be smaller. It also arranges a small "pond" and a shelter where animals can hide from the light. For this, the easiest way to put in a terrarium is an overturned flower pot with a broken side.

3. It is more difficult to establish long-term maintenance in a corner of wildlife newts. It is impossible to keep newts in the common terrarium, as recommended in some manuals. In such a terrarium, newts hide in secluded corners or thickets of plants and are inaccessible for observation. In addition, when the opportunity arises, newts leave such a terrarium. For tritons, it’s best to set up a separate aquaterrarium using a small aquarium about 30X20X20 cm in size or, even better, a rectangular glass aquarium. Clean sand is laid at the bottom of the aquarium with a layer of 1-2 cm, water is poured no more than 10 cm. Plants are put into the water (elodea, hornwort, etc.). In the middle of the aquarium is placed a stone that protrudes from the water in the form of a platform. A lid is made for the aquarium, which consists of a wooden frame tightly fitted to the edges of the aquarium and tightened with gauze or metal mesh.

Of the two types of newts (common and comb) found in the temperate zone of the Soviet Union, a larger comb crest is more convenient for keeping in a corner. He spends most of his time in water and is better used to captivity.

How Is The Terrarium

Tritons need to be trained mainly to be in water, since only in it animals take food. An aquedrarium with newts should be placed in a cooler place, not in the sun.

Terrariums for reptiles. For lizards, the same terrariums are suitable as for amphibians. Only for lizards a pond is not arranged, but a small clay cup with water is dug into the soil moistened only for plants.

For snakes, the terrarium should be large in size: it is desirable that it has a height of 50-60 cm. This makes it possible to place in it boughy tree branches. Not all animals adapt to life in terrariums. Various species of frogs are most suitable for corners of wildlife, and especially grass frog, green, pond frog and garlic. In the southern regions of the USSR, the most interesting inhabitants of terrariums can be wood frogs, or tree frogs.

A gray toad takes root better than all amphibians. Toads are nocturnal animals, but in captivity they easily switch to daytime nutrition, take food from tweezers and, if properly maintained, live very long lives, 6-7 years. It is good to keep newts in the terrarium, from reptiles. a fast-moving and viviparous lizard, an ordinary snake, a turtle. About what and how to feed the animals living in terrariums, is described in the article "Feeding the Animals of the Zoo".
