In the article I will talk about the terrarium for the land tortoise. I will explain how you can do it yourself at home with your own hands. I will give examples of how to make the bottom, lighting, heating, arrangement for food and drinkers, islands, bridges and a house. I will explain what the terrarium should be, what materials must be used for its manufacture.
Terrarium is a container in which the conditions for living animals, insects and reptiles are created, close to the natural habitat.
Do-it-yourself terrarium for a land tortoise
In order for the reptile house to meet the minimum necessary conditions for living, it is necessary to comply with certain requirements in the manufacture.
What should be a terrarium
- Spacious. Minimum size (length and width) = pet length 5, at least two reptile heights in height.
- Bright. It is necessary to add additional artificial lighting.
- Warm. Be sure to include a heating system in the arrangement.
- Moistened. There should be a spray of air daily.
- With a furnished place for meals.
- Located away from drafts.
At home, the best option for a turtle would be a horizontal terrarium
Terrarium Design and Materials
Its walls and floor can be wooden, glass and plastic. If the choice fell on glass, it would not be superfluous to glue it with an opaque film. Reptiles do not detect glass and can break against it.
In the manufacture of the walls of the home, it is necessary to think through the ventilation well. For this, as a rule, holes are drilled in the walls of the reptile’s dwelling.
In addition to the walls and the bottom, the house must have lighting, heating, a separate place for food and climbing.
Terrariums can have various designs
How and from what to make the bottom
Ideally, the bottom should be covered with a layer of soil that matches the natural habitat of the pet. Coarse sand and fine pebbles will do. It is better to lay a rubber mat under the litter (for example, used for bathrooms).
It is advisable to change the soil filling once every two weeks, completely updating the contents. Or thoroughly washing and cleaning the old.
A good option is to make a pet a warm floor (for example, electric), placed under a rubber mat, so that the turtle could not get to it and damage the wires. This system will help maintain favorable temperature conditions for reptile living all year round.

Lighting and heating
In a natural habitat, turtles live in a temperature of 30 degrees C. Therefore, it is necessary to create the same temperature in a dwelling. over, in the common room there is absolutely no need to raise the air temperature.
In order to maintain a high temperature in the tortoise’s dwelling, it is necessary to heat the air with incandescent lamps (power should be no more than 60 W) or an ultraviolet lamp. The second option is preferable, since it solves three problems at once: lighting, the required air temperature, sunlight.
In order for the turtle not to get burned by the lamp, the lighting device must be placed at a distance of at least 20 cm from the terrarium.
In the terrarium, turtles need heating, because in nature it is much warmer than at home
Arrangement of a place for food and drinkers
It is better to put a feeder and a drinking bowl in the warm part of the home. Dishes should be selected with low sides (so that it is convenient for the turtle to get it out), from strong material (so that the reptile does not crumble it and chokes on the debris), with non-sharp edges (so that the reptile does not scratch) and heavy enough (so as not to turn it over).
How to make islets, bridges, houses
Islands and bridges are usually needed for aquatic turtles. It is above this place that heating lamps should be placed. They serve to ensure that the reptile can get out of the water onto land and warm up. For land turtles, these structures are not required.
Types of Home Terrariums
- integral, made of one type of material, for example, plastic, glass, wooden;
- combined, the mills will be created from different materials, for example, three wooden and one glass, so that you can see the turtle;
- in the form of a floor pen, when the reptile moves on the floor, only walls are made.
