- What is a terrarium?
- How to make a terrarium yourself
Today we will learn how to make a terrarium with our own hands. And as plants for the terrarium we will use succulents.
Subsequently, all places where foam is visible will be bent by glue to auctioneers. If you want it to be better mixed with the bark and look more natural, you can customize it, for example, with peat concentrate, which is used to treat aquarium water. However, the cracks themselves will acquire their specific patina in time, whether it be plant substrates, which are painted by frying, or algae, which appear in some very humid places, etc. most of these joints will also grow in the future with plants.
You can choose other types of succulents, the main thing is that they are small in size and varied in texture and color. One of the plants should be the "main". in our case, it is echeveria, which will become the center of composition.
At the bottom of the terrarium, we used a mixture of peat and classical garden soil as a substrate. Then, in my opinion, the most difficult part came to my mind. plants. Here are a few things you need to know about, and the best and the best. when the future owner of the plant’s terrarium has experience and a certain source of funds for their improvement. If it’s the other way around and you look more like antituns, it’s better to choose some very nasty vegetables that will also shed some of your cultivation. This is a very dubious question, and it depends on the individual opinion.
2. The sequence of manufacture of the terrarium
We start with a drainage layer with a height of about 3 cm, which we lay on the bottom of the glass sphere. Succulents do not tolerate stagnation of water, so they simply need drainage.
In our case, we created it from colored glass pebbles. For these purposes, any fine pebbles, expanded clay, etc. We took color glasses exclusively for aesthetic reasons.
In short and simple. we tried to maximize the habitat in South America. So, let’s say, with a slight exaggeration and a narrow eye, our terarium can be called a biotope. If the space is large, there may be a significant temperature gradient. In addition to temperatures, logic and humidity are not the same everywhere. The bottom holds higher and evaporates slowly, but on the other hand, it is quite dry. In view of these facts, it is necessary to plant plants with a great balance, and not without a head, first measure the temperature, and also choose plant species in accordance with individual conditions.
Sprinkle the drainage layer with ready-made soil for succulents 3-4 cm high. You can use a universal soil mixture, but in this case sand is added to it.
We transplant succulents into our terrarium. Try to pick a variety of plants. In garden centers, you can now find whole sets of succulents about 10 cm high. We will stop at them.
If you plant under a fluorescent lamp, where there is high temperature and low humidity, such as anthurium, then you can not work for a long time. It is really very important to sit down on a couple of books if you are not sure of your gardener of valor and clarify what, how and where to place, depending on the need of light, Heat and humidity of a given plant. You avoid a lot of burnt leaves or rotten roots. This solution is for topping up and total humidity. Because of the animals in the terrarium or because of the plants. Many people choose automatic comfort systems.
Now pour a layer of decorative soil. Often, such fine and medium gravel is used in aquarium farming. It is found in a variety of colors and is sold either by weight or in various packaging. from small to large.
Buy the smallest packaging because we don’t need a lot of such stones. In our composition, they will serve as a decorative element and keep the lower layer of the earth from shifts.
It seems to me personally, as a rather effective way of recycling plants. While one species dries, the other can rotate the roots. For this reason, a good hand sprayer and jug seem to be the most suitable way of watering and watering. You will have control and review of what you need to breed or fill, and plants that will threaten to prepare just spray less often.
time is needed, but less money for plants that will need to be replaced due to improper care and conditions. For us, the choice was mainly the heart, because of the interest in bromeliad, botanical anthurius, and mainly orchids, we had no choice.
To give the composition a complete look, we place some decorative element in the terrarium. It may be something contrasting, like this decoration in the shape of a heart. It can be a beautiful stone or a shell. If you are a fan of naturalness, then you can not add decorative elements.
The plants were made of cork bark, moss and a pair of screws, wires and paws made by pockets to which they were then thrown. Epiphytic species with side roots attached to the background. The location of the installations was approximately as follows. At the top of the bottom, where the moss is laid and still holds moisture, there are planted craters that do not threaten rooting. These plants are mostly in a constant wet state, and the light here is not very intense.
Directly above the bottom against the background of the cork are Anturian botanists, well tolerated by high humidity, either in a mossy bale or "bad" on the bark. Dives twice a day and, rather, a timer. There are also some orchids that do not really matter.
Recently, it has been fashionable to plant plants in terrariums. So they look even more beautiful, especially if inside the glass containers not only plants are planted, but also miniature figures are placed. At first glance it seems that it is difficult. But this is not so!
What is a terrarium?
Florarium or terrarium is a container made of plastic or glass into which plants are planted. Its opening is narrowed in most cases, but some forms of florarium look like an aquarium.
Above this, approximately in the middle of the terrarium, is an orchid. There are ideal conditions for them both in terms of humidity and light. They are not excessive, but they do not suffer from a lack of light. They are also not in a permanent swamp, and the substrate has sufficient ability to dry, which is an important aspect in the cultivation of orchids in general. Several species of ferns growing from the root balls of plants appeared after some time.
Above the orchids is a layer of bromine, which is still sorted according to need and, above all, in accordance with the ability to withstand light and heat at a relatively high temperature. Above are species with silver leaves that are more resistant to heat.
Plant Terrariums look great in any interior. They are especially good for small rooms where there is no way to arrange a large number of plants. Before you begin assembling the florarium, you should pay attention to some nuances:
- The conditions in the tank, due to the narrow neck, are created the same as in the greenhouse.
- How is the terrarium for plants ? Very simple. Pebbles or small stones, charcoal, soil are poured at the bottom of the tank. Then plants are planted. You can fill the soil in the florarium through a funnel or folded paper.
- Sometimes terrariums are in the form of a display case. In this case, one of their parts is played by a window.
- Plants for florarium should be selected based on their need for light. Cacti and ferns grow well in the shade. In a bright place, it is better to grow orchids.
How to make a terrarium yourself
To make a terrarium, you should decide which plants will be planted in it. It is important that they are comfortable developing together and that they do not grow large. The best option is succulents, ferns and cacti.
But we mixed our own. We used a lot of peat, forest litter, garden compost or dung, for example, beetle larva, peat moss, or crushed bark or expanded clay and mixed as desired plants. And now the finished terrarium, about two months after planting.
And after five months: so much for bets, placements, etc. when you are planted and the plants are fun, you will soon begin to decide two more things: water and fertilizer. If you throw water from a faucet while standing or boil, you will soon begin to form stones from settled stone. Besides the fact that it does not look beautiful, flowers are “harder to breathe" with such a coating. The solution is, for example, demineralized water from reverse osmosis. It works perfectly without problems and without a trace of stone. An alternative to semi-water can also be rainwater.
In this case, it will be easier for you if you give preference to colors that tolerate shadow or partial shade well. After that, find a container of durable glass. Its shape can be any:
- Aquarium. it can be covered with glass on top.
- Lampshade of the lantern type.
- Cap. in this case, it should be lifted periodically so that the flowers can breathe.
- Cap in the form of a cone.
After you have decided on the form, you should find a place where you will put the florarium. The air temperature in it should be average; lighting is required, but not in direct sunlight; It is also worth noting that the surface should be flat, away from animals and small children.
As for fertilization, you should not use chemical fertilizers in any way. If there were no animals in the terrarium, this would not be a problem, but frogs that are very sensitive to chemicals in general will probably not like it a bit. He wants to think about something completely non-toxic on a natural basis. From time to time we tried to grab granular manure, and sometimes we dissolve a handful of these granules. Of course, we avoid direct contact with frogs. we just don’t blame them for them.
Another thing is that plants can supply a lot of minerals and nutrients. it’s tea or coffee beans. For example, I have this “trick” for ferns. Another fertilizer method is “fertilized nettle”. Instructions for this type of fertilizer will also suffice online. Believe that such visitors are very difficult to get rid of. We fought for them for a while, having the opportunity to completely eat all the young leaves of anthurium. We got rid of them by placing potato slices everywhere after the terrarium, which they tried very well and from which it was possible to collect.
- Put the soil in the tank according to the method described above.
- Lay a layer of moss.
- Add selected plants and decorations. these can be shells, stones, decor for the aquarium.
Important! Small animals or insects should not be allowed into the terrarium. They, or plants, will fall ill. And before carrying out work, it is necessary to thoroughly rinse the glass container, preferably with antibacterial soap. That’s all! It remains only to enjoy the result.
It has been a long way. Otherwise, however, the terrarium plant, unlike the aquarium, is absolutely seamless. An aquarium that is older usually looks worse, it grows with algae, and the bottom is covered with silt. On the other hand, a terrarium planted with plants is more beautiful and handsome with age.
In my opinion, one of the most beautiful frogs, between realistic and breeding species. These frogs live only in the lower half of the terrarium. Sometimes they can be found in the upper branch, where there is a lot of heat, but most of the time they spend more at the bottom. The interesting thing about these slippers is that they have a very normal daily routine. Frogs begin to crawl out of hiding. One loved only one bromeliad, another crack in the bark, others were going to sleep on the moss between the roots of the anthurium.
