Terrarium Care

In order for the terrarium to function as a single well-coordinated system that provides the specified parameters of temperature, humidity, lighting, regular monitoring of the proper operation of all devices and installations is necessary. Never ignore one or another malfunction of the equipment, because ordinary negligence can turn into an irreparable disaster for animals that are completely and completely dependent on their owner. Systematically check the integrity of the wiring insulation, especially if you use live rats and mice as feed animals. To prevent your pets from wandering around the apartment and causing troubles, carefully check the integrity of the glass, and equip the doors of the terrarium with reliable locks.

For the health and longevity of snakes, it is necessary to maintain clean and tidy the entire artificially created ecosystem. Do not wait for an unpleasant odor. Promptly remove animal feces, food debris, crawls, etc. To simplify cleaning, snake lovers often keep their pets on hygroscopic wood pellets that perfectly absorb excess moisture. Animal waste is removed using large forceps or a small spatula. Water in drinking bowls and baths is changed daily, and when feces enter, it is changed immediately.
In home terrariums inhabited by a couple or a group of animals, when there is a shortage of space or when young reptiles are reared, soil replacement is carried out on average once a quarter or six months. In some well-equipped large terrariums with lush vegetation and a minimal number of animals, biological equilibrium is established, and soil changes become unnecessary.

During cleaning, all electrical appliances are disconnected from the network. Reptiles can either be removed from the terrarium, observing all the rules of manipulating snakes, or isolated in a specially created shelter, closed with a movable gate. Be sure to inspect and thin out the plants, remove dead leaves, and, if necessary, carry out their pruning, transplanting and treatment.
For all fluorescent tubes during operation, the power and, consequently, the intensity of the light flux are reduced. Replace and ballasts.
Regular care is also required by a humidification system. When using hard water, nozzles (sprays) can become clogged with lime deposits, which, of course, reduces the efficiency of installations for spraying water. To avoid trouble, all nozzles and tubes should be cleaned or replaced with new ones at least once a month.

Special care require glass terrarium. The expositional properties of the terrarium are sharply violated if the sight glass is covered with salt smudges, fingerprints, stains, etc. To clean the glasses, use a moist, dense cloth or a foam sponge for dishes. It is forbidden to use synthetic detergents, as well as chemical compositions for washing glass. With severe pollution, you can clean the terrarium with baking soda. To prevent whitish salt spots and smudges from the evaporation of water on the glass, use only distilled water to spray the “snake house” and the terrarium flora. After cleaning with soda, the entire terrarium is washed several times with clean water.
Organic glass is most carefully handled using a nylon cloth or sponge. The use of any abrasive particles leads to the appearance of a network of small cracks that reduce the visibility and aesthetic value of a living corner.
Replacement of the main decor items in the terrarium, shelters, climbing branches, wall cladding, etc. should be minimized.

General cleaning of the terrarium with the whole range of disinfection measures is carried out quite rarely (for example, with reptile disease). In this case, the snake is taken out of the terrarium and subjected to a thorough examination in order to make a diagnosis. Next, they carry out a complete "dismantling": they remove the soil, pots with plants and all decorative objects and shelters (driftwood, stones, bamboo, etc.). Everything is thoroughly washed with a brush, and if necessary, replaced with new ones. Be sure to inspect the bottom of the terrarium, clean, rinse and wipe it dry. After drying, the terrarium is again “revived” and decorated.
