Types of Terrariums
The decoration of the terrarium is completely your fantasy, its design can be created to your liking. They can be vertical or horizontal, glass or made of plastic, wood or glass, dry or water, which, of course, depends on the type of animal. Plastic terrarium can be used both for carrying animals and for keeping. However, one must take into account that the terrarium for the red-eared turtle should be equipped only with non-toxic plants and large soil.
Horizontal reptile habitats are intended for terrestrial or semi-aquatic species that lead a coastal lifestyle and do not climb trees. Such a terrarium for snakes is ideal, it is convenient to contain land turtles and lizards. The length of such terrariums is two or more times higher than the height.
In vertical "houses", the height of which exceeds the length, chameleons, iguanas, some species of snakes, tree frogs are populated. Here, snags or branches for climbing animals are necessarily installed. The iguana terrarium is recommended to be made of plastic and plywood, complementing the design with sliding glass. Thanks to this construction, moisture is well preserved, it is of great importance in creating favorable conditions for the inhabitants. Good ventilation plays a significant role if a terrarium is selected for a chameleon.
In cubic terrariums, reptiles are kept that climb horizontal and vertical surfaces. Therefore, the height and width of such structures are almost the same.
If you want to breed plants for reptiles, get a paludarium (an artificial swamp, where land plays a greater role than water). In such conditions, you can breed more species of plants than, for example, in an aquarium. With the constant support of abundant humidity, it is good to grow ferns, mosses and other tropical plants. For good plant growth, it is necessary to create constant ventilation and provide them with light, for this, ultraviolet lamps for terrarium are used. They provide the process of photosynthesis.
Features of the aquaterrarium
Aquaterrarium. is a vessel with more water than sushi. This is their main difference from the paludarium. Aquararariums, like other types of terrariums, should be equipped with heaters. This equipment for the terrarium should not be done on its own. it is unsafe for reptiles. Today there is a tendency to breed red-eared turtles. Terrarium for turtles should be fully equipped with all necessary accessories from a heater to plants. On the recommendation of a specialist, you can install a lamp. A house for a turtle must contain islands: it can be a decorative rock, snag or ladder protruding from the water. These items enable aquatic turtles to bask under an installed UV lamp. The terrarium for a land tortoise must be spacious, it can be made of plexiglass or wood. It is unacceptable to keep tropical species of turtles in open-air cages in autumn, winter and spring, if the climatic conditions in your region differ from the tropics.
Terrarium for snakes, as well as newts and frogs and has some similarities. First of all, on such terrariums there should be covers to prevent pets from escaping. Secondly, shelter is needed. It can be a grotto made of stones or a coconut. These types of reptiles are capricious and require special control of water temperature. Water should not exceed 20 C, so if necessary, equip special refrigeration units.
The tropical terrarium is a kind of jungle. The water part is small. Such a terrarium is enriched with a large number of climbing branches and constant intense ultraviolet light for additional heating. Such conditions create a favorable background for animals.
The main heating is the thermal mat for the terrarium, which is laid underground. The temperature should be high enough from 25 to 35 C. The tropical environment is good for green iguanas and chameleons. Since these reptiles are large, a large terrarium is needed, because its size depends entirely on the animal that you will contain in it. The back wall can be covered with a rough surface, which provides an additional climbing opportunity.
For desert terrarium, a special type of sand is used as soil. calcium sand. When reptiles enter the gastrointestinal tract, it is easily excreted naturally, when ordinary sand can contribute to blockage of the intestine. The minimum temperature of the desert aquarium should be at least 30 C0, so ultraviolet lamps are simply necessary. In such a small indoor desert, you need to place a shallow container with clean water. Desert terrariums are designed for a bearded agama and a land tortoise. It is advisable to keep a Central Asian tortoise in the pen.
Plants in the terrarium
Living plants for the terrarium not only decorate it, but also serve as a source of oxygen and sometimes are in addition to the nutrition of reptiles. That’s why they are given more preference than artificial. Most aquarists are attracted to dinghy plants. The table shows some plant names and their characteristics.
