Types of Terrariums

The decoration of the terrarium is completely your fantasy, its design can be created to your liking. They can be vertical or horizontal, glass or made of plastic, wood or glass, dry or water, which, of course, depends on the type of animal. Plastic terrarium can be used both for carrying animals and for keeping. However, one must take into account that the terrarium for the red-eared turtle should be equipped only with non-toxic plants and large soil.

Horizontal reptile habitats are intended for terrestrial or semi-aquatic species that lead a coastal lifestyle and do not climb trees. Such a terrarium for snakes is ideal, it is convenient to contain land turtles and lizards. The length of such terrariums is two or more times higher than the height.

In vertical "houses", the height of which exceeds the length, chameleons, iguanas, some species of snakes, tree frogs are populated. Here, snags or branches for climbing animals are necessarily installed. The iguana terrarium is recommended to be made of plastic and plywood, complementing the design with sliding glass. Thanks to this construction, moisture is well preserved, it is of great importance in creating favorable conditions for the inhabitants. Good ventilation plays a significant role if a terrarium is selected for a chameleon.

In cubic terrariums, reptiles are kept that climb horizontal and vertical surfaces. Therefore, the height and width of such structures are almost the same.

If you want to breed plants for reptiles, get a paludarium (an artificial swamp, where land plays a greater role than water). In such conditions, you can breed more species of plants than, for example, in an aquarium. With the constant support of abundant humidity, it is good to grow ferns, mosses and other tropical plants. For good plant growth, it is necessary to create constant ventilation and provide them with light, for this, ultraviolet lamps for terrarium are used. They provide the process of photosynthesis.

Water should not exceed 20 C, so if necessary, equip special refrigeration units.

The tropical terrarium is a kind of jungle. The water part is small. Such a terrarium is enriched with a large number of climbing branches and constant intense ultraviolet light for additional heating. Such conditions create a favorable background for animals.

The main heating is the thermal mat for the terrarium, which is laid underground. The temperature should be high enough from 25 to 35 C. The tropical environment is good for green iguanas and chameleons. Since these reptiles are large, a large terrarium is needed, because its size depends entirely on the animal that you will contain in it. The back wall can be covered with a rough surface, which provides an additional climbing opportunity.
