In order to correctly choose a terrarium Your spider needs to know what type it belongs to: wood or land, because for terrestrial species of spiders, a horizontal type terrarium is needed. Woody species are more suitable for vertical-type terrariums. Also, one must take into account the fact that woody species require increased ventilation.
The area of the terrarium for the spider should be at least two lengths of the spider, that is, the terrarium should be twice as large as the span of the legs of the spider. Of course, you can make a more spacious terrarium, but since tarantula spiders spend most of their life in shelters (burrows, tree hollows, etc.), large volumes will not work, because the spider will not feel comfortable in them. This problem can be solved by installing shelters, although a noticeable minus in such cases is the fact that the spider will almost never be visible.
Shelter for the terrarium
As shelters you can use: coconut shell, halves of a broken pot, a piece of bark or cork. But it is increasingly suitable for terrestrial species. For woody species, some basis is necessary for the construction of the nest, a piece of bark or driftwood is quite suitable.
Soil is sold in pressed briquettes or tablets. Before laying in the terrarium, it must be soaked, for this we put the briquette in a bucket, fill it with warm water and wait until it gets wet. Then we squeeze it so that water does not pour from it and put it in a 2–7 cm thick terrarium.
As a rule, the drinking bowl is given only to adult spiders, the kids do not need it, they need enough moisture that gets along with the food. As a drinking bowl, any small saucer is suitable. If the terrarium has a sufficiently thick soil layer, then it is best to make a stand for the drinker, which will be a little less than the soil layer, this is done so that the drinker does not fail.
Temperature and humidity in the terrarium
A hygrometer and a thermometer will not hurt, but this is not necessary at all, because you can determine the approximate humidity from the soil, and the temperature can be determined by eye, the range of acceptable temperature for spiders is usually quite extensive.
In most cases, heating the terrarium is necessary at intervals when it is already quite cold, and the batteries are not turned on or off. At this time, the apartments are cool. Suitable for heating: a thermo-mat, a thermal cable, special stones and driftwood; also a conventional incandescent bulb, which is desirable to dim and install outside the terrarium, is suitable as a heating device, since the spider can easily burn on it, moreover, such bulbs greatly dry the air, which not suitable for spiders. Also, it is advisable to purchase a thermostat that will maintain the temperature at a certain level.
All tarantula spiders lead a nocturnal lifestyle, so that lighting in the terrarium is not needed and will even interfere with the spider, but if you decide to illuminate the terrarium with something, then you can use infrared lamps as a backlight, the spider does not see this light, so that such lamps do not interfere with him.
It is better to install the illumination outside the terrarium, since similar lamps, like ordinary incandescent lamps, dry the air very much. Ordinary light can be set as a standby, so that you can, for a short while, turn it on and watch it, or show your favorite in all its glory to friends. It is also very convenient to use light when cleaning the terrarium, as in the dark it is not always possible to detect food residues that must be removed to maintain cleanliness in the terrarium.
Decorations, decorations for the terrarium
As a background, you can use bark of cork oak.
You can also decorate the terrarium with various ceramic figures, whether it’s a scab, a skull or a mini castle for your spider.
Same terrarium can be decorated with artificial plants, the main thing is that they do not emit any chemical odors. Living plants can be planted in spacious terrariums with shelter for the spider, but you can not plant cacti, which spiders can easily get hurt. It is better to do this in separate pots, in order to make it easier to work in the terrarium.
Tarantula spiders who actively weave their web do not need special decorations, anyway, over time, this beauty will disappear under a layer of the web, which in itself serves as a beautiful decoration, the most important thing is to correctly calculate everything and provide the spider with suitable conditions for weaving. Thus, the web of the tarantula spider is a decoration element of the terrarium itself!
