Terrarium is a place where reptiles and amphibians can live at home. For each type of animal, it is necessary to equip the terrarium in a special way. This article describes how to independently build and equip a house for a chameleon.
In the wild, chameleons like to live in a wooded area on trees, less often in burrows in the ground. They can be found in all types of tropical and mountain rainforests, in savannas, sometimes in deserts and steppes. They inhabit the entire African continent (except for the Sahara), Madagascar, most of the Iberian Peninsula, the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, the Arabian Peninsula, the islands of Cyprus and Crete, southern India, Sri Lanka, the territory of Yemen and Oman, and some islands in the western Indian Ocean
What reptiles can you get at home
As a rule, at home contain Yemeni and panther chameleons.
- Representatives of the first species are among the largest in their family. The length of their body reaches 60 cm, they are very hardy and easily adapt.
- The second species is smaller, up to 52 cm in length, it is endemic to the island of Madagascar. Prefers a humid and warm climate. Easily gets used to human society.
Less common chameleons are planted. They are much smaller than their counterparts, up to 30 cm in length, but the masters of camouflage are the best.
How to make a terrarium for a chameleon with your own hands
The optimal overall size for the house will be 604080 cm. For it you will need the following glass plates:
- bottom. 58.839.4 cm;
- sides. 39.479.4 cm;
- back wall. 6079.4 cm.
Dimensions are written taking into account the thickness of the sealant layer and the side parts.
Together with the bottom, sides and back wall, you need to cut out the upper part of the terrarium, consisting of two halves, a door (2 pcs.), Slats for ventilation (2 pcs.), Fences for doors (1 pc.), Glass strips for fixing the mesh on top ventilation (2 pcs.). Approximate dimensions of the workpieces:
- 6014.7 cm (2 pcs. Of the top of the terrarium);
- 30.473.4 cm (2 pcs. Of door);
- 58.86 cm (3 pcs. Slats for ventilation and fences);
- 58.82 cm (2 pcs. Straps for fixing the mesh).
Materials for the manufacture
It is necessary to take:
Let’s start making a house for a reptile:
- If you cut the glass yourself, the edges must be processed using a grinding piece.
- Take a piece of glass, which will be the bottom, and around the perimeter, without indentation, paste over it with masking tape. Sealant will be applied to this area.
If your pet belongs to the tree-climbing species, then he does not need soil. It is enough to cover the bottom of the house with a simple green plastic rug. To make the animal feel at home, place more branches, snags and plants in the terrarium, some of which must be natural. There may be ordinary sphagnum moss. It will help maintain the right microclimate.
Use a glass with high sides or a plastic bottle without a top as a feeder.
Since chameleons cannot drink from containers, they do not need a drinker. It is necessary to build an irrigation system, as animals get water by licking dew drops from foliage. You can also install a waterfall or a shallow pool. they will complement the interior of the terrarium. You can also manually spray the plants, or water the pet with a syringe, but this is more troublesome.
The right climate in the terrarium
The chameleon is a tropical animal, so it needs a special microclimate in the terrarium.
Good ventilation is the key to a pet’s health. Without it, even with a mesh roof, air masses will rise for a long time from the bottom of the terrarium, forming a stagnation zone where harmful odors and excess moisture will accumulate. Therefore, it is necessary to make at least the simplest ventilation, convection. An exhaust hole is made in the lid (should occupy 1 / 3–1 \ 2 of the roof), and the supply air is in the front wall, at the bottom, five centimeters high.
The optimum humidity is 60–70%. It can be maintained at this level with the help of a pool or a waterfall: moisture from them will gradually evaporate and saturate the air. In addition, regular spraying of live plants with sprinklers can be carried out. A hygrometer is installed to measure humidity.
Chameleons are comfortable at 27–29 ° C during the day and at 21–24 ° C at night. Under the lamp (heat source) should be 30–32 ° С. A temperature switch is needed to adjust the temperature, and a thermometer to measure it.
