Terrarium For A Chameleon How To Make And Equip Yourself

Terrarium is a place where reptiles and amphibians can live at home. For each type of animal, it is necessary to equip the terrarium in a special way. This article describes how to independently build and equip a house for a chameleon.

Chameleon lifestyle

In the wild, chameleons like to live in a wooded area on trees, less often in burrows in the ground. They can be found in all types of tropical and mountain rainforests, in savannas, sometimes in deserts and steppes. They inhabit the entire African continent (except for the Sahara), Madagascar, most of the Iberian Peninsula, the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, the Arabian Peninsula, the islands of Cyprus and Crete, southern India, Sri Lanka, the territory of Yemen and Oman, and some islands in the western Indian Ocean

What reptiles can you get at home

As a rule, at home contain Yemeni and panther chameleons.

  1. Representatives of the first species are among the largest in their family. The length of their body reaches 60 cm, they are very hardy and easily adapt.

  2. The second species is smaller, up to 52 cm in length, it is endemic to the island of Madagascar. Prefers a humid and warm climate. Easily gets used to human society.

Less common chameleons are planted. They are much smaller than their counterparts, up to 30 cm in length, but the masters of camouflage are the best.

How to make a terrarium for a chameleon with your own hands

The optimal overall size for the house will be 604080 cm. For it you will need the following glass plates:

  • bottom. 58.839.4 cm;
  • sides. 39.479.4 cm;
  • back wall. 6079.4 cm.

Dimensions are written taking into account the thickness of the sealant layer and the side parts.

Together with the bottom, sides and back wall, you need to cut out the upper part of the terrarium, consisting of two halves, a door (2 pcs.), Slats for ventilation (2 pcs.), Fences for doors (1 pc.), Glass strips for fixing the mesh on top ventilation (2 pcs.). Approximate dimensions of the workpieces:

  • 6014.7 cm (2 pcs. Of the top of the terrarium);
  • 30.473.4 cm (2 pcs. Of door);
  • 58.86 cm (3 pcs. Slats for ventilation and fences);
  • 58.82 cm (2 pcs. Straps for fixing the mesh).

Step-by-step instruction

Let’s start making a house for a reptile:

  1. If you cut the glass yourself, the edges must be processed using a grinding piece.
  2. Take a piece of glass, which will be the bottom, and around the perimeter, without indentation, paste over it with masking tape. Sealant will be applied to this area.
  • Remove excess tape with a blade. Glue the back of the glass in the same way.
  • Glue the side parts of the structure in the same way. Only in the part that will border the bottom, indent from the edge by 5 mm (glass thickness). Cut off excess tape. On the opposite side, indentation is not needed.
  • Indent and on the back wall in places of contact with the sides and bottom.
  • Fill the area highlighted with adhesive tape with sealant.
  • Dock all parts quickly. Press the sidewall to the bottom and press down. Press it with the back wall and align it (the walls should be strictly perpendicular to the bottom). Attach the second sidewall.
  • Fasten the parts of the aquarium below and above with masking tape.
  • Use a spatula to remove excess sealant.
  • After aligning the seams, carefully remove the masking tape attached around the perimeter.
  • Attach the top of the terrarium, consisting of two parts (there should be a gap between them for future ventilation). Remove the tape.
  • Leave the structure to dry. In the meantime, prepare the parts that will be the front fences, ventilation, and the upper bar for attaching the doors.
  • Wipe all blanks of additional parts with a glass cleaner. Then moisten them and glue them with self-adhesive (it also needs to be moistened).
  • Use a spatula to smooth out self-adhesive by dispersing air bubbles.
  • When the adhesive has dried, use the blade to cut off the excess tape.
  • Use masking tape to seal the self-adhesive, so as not to stain it with sealant. Cut off excess tape.
  • At the bottom of the edge, measure the distance where the first fence will be (at least 5 cm). Use a tape to draw a line. 5-6 mm back from it and glue the second strip.
  • Fill the resulting strip with sealant and insert the bar there, center, press and remove the excess sealant. Fix the bar with improvised means (you can use polypropylene corners).
  • Separate the area for the second bar. It should pass along the edge of the glass (bottom).
  • Apply sealant. Insert the bar, center and lock.
  • Remove excess sealant and wait for it to harden.
  • Make front ventilation. It needs a metal mesh with a millimeter cell. Its width should equal the distance between the slats.
  • Fix the grid on the strips and on top of it, with the help of sealant, attach the guides for the doors. The guide should be flush with the front ventilation bar. Press down and align all parts. Remove excess sealant.
  • On the second part of the grid, attach the aluminum corner (for fixing) with sealant (remove the excess).
  • After the connecting material dries, turn the structure over and proceed with the construction of the upper ventilation.
  • In the same way, prepare and fasten one bar for the fence along the edge. Center and align it. Secure with tape.
  • For upper ventilation, also use an aluminum mesh. Place it between the parts of the cover and secure with strips of glass with sealant.
  • On the lid, on the inside, mark the places where the lamps will be mounted with a marker. Apply sealant and attach lamp holders.
  • Attach the starter, remove the wires into the technological hole.
  • Place a bulb holder.
  • While the terrarium dries, clean the glass from sealant and stains.
  • Insert the doors. The design is ready.

    If your pet belongs to the tree-climbing species, then he does not need soil. It is enough to cover the bottom of the house with a simple green plastic rug. To make the animal feel at home, place more branches, snags and plants in the terrarium, some of which must be natural. There may be ordinary sphagnum moss. It will help maintain the right microclimate.

    Use a glass with high sides or a plastic bottle without a top as a feeder.

    Since chameleons cannot drink from containers, they do not need a drinker. It is necessary to build an irrigation system, as animals get water by licking dew drops from foliage. You can also install a waterfall or a shallow pool. they will complement the interior of the terrarium. You can also manually spray the plants, or water the pet with a syringe, but this is more troublesome.

    The right climate in the terrarium

    The chameleon is a tropical animal, so it needs a special microclimate in the terrarium.

    Good ventilation is the key to a pet’s health. Without it, even with a mesh roof, air masses will rise for a long time from the bottom of the terrarium, forming a stagnation zone where harmful odors and excess moisture will accumulate. Therefore, it is necessary to make at least the simplest ventilation, convection. An exhaust hole is made in the lid (should occupy 1 / 3–1 \ 2 of the roof), and the supply air is in the front wall, at the bottom, five centimeters high.

    The optimum humidity is 60–70%. It can be maintained at this level with the help of a pool or a waterfall: moisture from them will gradually evaporate and saturate the air. In addition, regular spraying of live plants with sprinklers can be carried out. A hygrometer is installed to measure humidity.

    Chameleons are comfortable at 27–29 ° C during the day and at 21–24 ° C at night. Under the lamp (heat source) should be 30–32 ° С. A temperature switch is needed to adjust the temperature, and a thermometer to measure it.
