Recently, more and more people prefer iguanas: they do not cause allergies, practically have no smell, fluff or wool does not fly around the apartment, and such a pet is exotic and speaks in favor of the originality of the owner. At home, reptiles can live about 15 years. When buying an iguana, it is worth remembering that these reptiles practically do not breed under artificial conditions, in nature, the appearance of babies often falls at the end of spring. the beginning of summer, so if you are offered a monthly iguana in January, you should not believe this. A healthy iguana should have a bright color, a pink oral cavity, the absence of puffiness and swelling on the limbs. An adult is considered an individual who has reached the age of 1.5-2 years.

If you have acquired a reptile, it’s time to do home improvement for her. You can keep pets separately or in a group. 1 male and one or two females. It is preferable to choose a terrarium of plywood and plastic with sliding glass, all the seams are sealed with silicone glue. so the "house" will be better to keep the humidity level and constant temperature.

Lighting is one of the most important factors for the existence of reptiles, the rays of the sun, which the iguana receives in natural conditions, can be replaced with ultraviolet lamps. Thanks to such lighting, the body of the iguana assimilates trace elements from food, and vitamin D3 is produced under UV radiation. Choose lamps designed specifically for reptiles. Repti Glo, Repti Light, Iguana Light and others. They are installed in a terrarium or near ventilation at a distance of no more than 30 centimeters from it; lamps can simultaneously serve as a common source of lighting. The daylight should last at least 10-12 hours, after 8-12 months the intensity of the ultraviolet radiation decreases, so it is advisable to change them at least once a year, otherwise, except for light, such lamps will not bring any benefit. If you have the opportunity to take the iguana to the balcony on a warm sunny day, this will benefit reptiles.
For night heating, colored lamps (ceramic, mirror or incandescent) are suitable, the main thing is that their light does not interfere with the rest of the owners: it can be dark blue or dark red lamps, install a thermometer in the terrarium and make sure that the temperature is at least 24 degrees , and under the lamp at all 27-28 degrees.

Pay attention to the size of the terrarium: despite the fact that the iguana can fit in a 50-liter aquarium, this does not mean that such conditions will be comfortable. In the terrarium, you need to constantly maintain the desired microclimate, this is a closed system, which should not depend on external factors. In nature, iguanas live in the tropics, where there is high humidity and a temperature of at least 25 degrees. similar conditions must be created for reptiles. The highest temperature that a pet can withstand is 40 degrees, in no case do not overheat the terrarium.
For normal digestion of food, reptiles need a temperature of 31-35 degrees, the rest of the time 25-30 degrees is enough. Adult individuals are resistant to lower temperatures, at night it can drop to around 22-24 degrees.
There are other heating devices: for example, artificial stones with built-in heating elements. Some stones are even equipped with temperature controllers, but most owners consider these products unsafe and can cause burns. There are so-called warmers for reptiles, but they are more suitable for geckos and small lizards, and not for iguanas. these reptiles prefer to bask, sitting on branches, rather than lying on their stomach on the floor of the terrarium. The best option is a mirror or ceramic heater: it does not interfere with the animal’s sleep at night, the main thing is to install it outside the reach of the lizard so that it does not get burns.

Humidity should also be high: at least 80%. Moisture is a component of the health of the iguana, so you should not neglect it. Humidity is provided by the installation of injection systems, ventilation, installation of waterfalls or small pools. It is worth remembering that the terrarium needs to be installed in a calm place, in a non-passage room without drafts.

Such requirements as hygroscopicity, hygiene, environmental friendliness are made to the soil. Someone uses paper or newspaper sheets. they absorb moisture well, but you need to change them often enough, and printing ink from newspapers can be harmful to reptiles. Rugs made of artificial peat are also very comfortable: they are easy to pull out, disinfect and put back on. You can give preference to processed granular bark. it is not cheap, but it absorbs moisture well and has an attractive appearance, it needs to be changed often enough, because pathogenic bacteria can multiply in it. Pellets for rabbits are cheap enough, they are harmless and are an excellent adsorbent, however, they can not stand moisture, so you have to change them regularly.

Please note that for iguanas it is not advisable to use gravel, sand, loose types of soil. reptiles swallow them, and this is unsafe. The same situation is with fibers from synthetic rugs: fibers can cling to the legs of a lizard and provoke inflammation, if you want to put a rug, choose with a dense base and fasten it around the edges so that the product does not unwind.

Lizards spend most of the day in the trees, so you need to equip several areas for "sunbathing" and branches for climbing, which will support the weight of the animal. Set shelves made of wood or cork at different heights. the iguana will be able to choose the optimum temperature for herself. Remember that lizards often do not stay on a smooth surface, so shelves and branches should be rough. If you collected branches in nature, before putting them into the terrarium, place them in the oven (temperature 100-110 degrees) and hold for a couple of hours, then wash and remove the old bark thoroughly. You can also put several strong thick ropes in the iguana’s house. reptiles like to climb them too.

Choose branches of fruit trees or oak, do not use conifers. The branch slice must be firmly fixed on the floor of the terrarium, if there is a large gap. there is a chance that the creature’s tail or finger will get there, this is a risk of injury. At the top you can put pots with climbing plants that are not harmful to iguanas. lizards will eat them, and also greens improves the microclimate in the terrarium and serves as a shelter for pets. Provide shelters like snags and caves in the terrarium, from time to time you can let an iguana walk around the apartment, pick it up, and at this time someone will disinfect the terrarium. All driftwood, bowls, walls should be washed thoroughly using reptile-safe means, once a month complete and thorough disinfection.
Iguanas prefer plant foods; their digestive system is not intended for digesting meat. Feeding fish, chicken, dog food allows the iguana to quickly gain weight, but at the same time negatively affects its health. such pets do not live long, up to 5 years.
