Due to the growing popularity of terrarium, today on sale you can find ready-made terrariums for snakes of various sizes and shapes. On the one hand, it is convenient for amateurs who never independently make terrariums (you have to admit that this process requires knowledge, skill and some experience), on the other hand, a purchased terrarium may have some inconsistencies with specific requirements that ensure the successful maintenance of certain species of snakes at home.
So, for example, insufficient ventilation surfaces lead to stagnation of air and the development of various chronic diseases of reptiles. The holes for the wiring of the power of the illuminators may not correspond to the location of the heating sources. In addition, a do-it-yourself terrarium is not cheaper than purchased because of the required equipment, which will have to be purchased in parts.
Terrarium for snakes: what a home for reptiles should look like
Despite the oblique edges and cut corners, all terrariums can be conditionally divided into horizontal structures, cubic houses and vertical tanks.
For snakes that live on the surface of the earth, horizontal terrariums are preferred; the main thing is that they should not be too narrow, allowing the animals to move in any direction. Such terrariums are suitable for residents of open spaces. steppes, semi-deserts and deserts. In this case, the diagonal of the base of the terrarium should be approximately equal to the length of the snake. However, this rule justifies itself only when keeping snakes with a body length from 50 cm to 2 m. For baby snakes, the diagonal is doubled due to the inability to create the required temperature gradient in a small volume. With the content of sedentary snakes with a body length of more than 2 m, there is no need to create such large terrariums, since their area will not be used by animals, and it is advisable to reduce the diagonal by about one and a half times. Such designs are also convenient for private houses, where for each of their terrariums you can choose a separate room, the interior of which does not detract from the dignity of the house where snakes live.
Reptiles that are predominantly tree-climbing and climbing, need cubic terrariums or vertical-type terrariums. They make it possible to create a significant difference in temperature and humidity vertically, and also provide a relatively large living space for animals with a small footprint. Of course, for the full use of this volume in the terrarium, there must be branches for climbing or different levels of shelves on the walls. Take a closer look at your bookcase shelves and build something similar in the terrarium for snakes, only on a smaller scale and with holes through which the snake can climb onto the shelf. Reptiles like this interior and they are happy to go to the shelves to sleep.
In cubic terrariums with sufficient thickness of the substrate, burrowing species of snakes are also found, which lay a system of moves in the thickness of the soil. You can’t imagine a better house for snakes for your home interior if the interior of dark furniture surrounds a transparent terrarium. Choose the dark corner between the cabinets and send the terrarium on the stand exactly there.

Window views of dry aquariums are completely unsuitable for apartments with narrow window sills. Take a look at such a terrarium for snakes and a photo of it in the interior. Near the window, this house with a snake looks unattractive, and the reptiles have nowhere to hide in order to rest from the scrutiny of the owners.
A terrarium window sill is placed between the central heating battery and the bottom edge of the window. In order for there to be a temperature difference inside the reptile’s house and not to overheat during the heating period, the terrarium should go beyond the battery located in the interior of the room immediately below the window.
In such a terrarium, it is convenient to keep animals in need of constant heating of the soil, for which they are sent to a bedside table and turned into an item of furniture set decorated with wooden walls of the same quality as other furniture in the house.
Terrarium-stand is often used as a bedside table for household appliances, a coffee table with a glass top.
The disadvantage of the terrarium-stand is that reptiles are constantly stressed, as there are always people around them. To avoid this, glass with one mirror side can be used for such structures.
A good temporary element in the design of the terrarium in the spring and summer is the natural turf with grass and small bushes that increase humidity and are a good shelter for animals for several weeks.
The decoration of the room can be terrarium furniture (built-in design), placed between home furnishings or in the corner of the room. The reptiles’ houses are shaped like a prism or a triangle at the base so that the design looks like an integral part of the room, but you will have to decorate the walls of the former piece of furniture with vinyl film to match the polished surface of the cabinets.
Distinctive features of the terrarium-picture and the terrarium-screen are their height from floor to ceiling, as well as a length exceeding the height of the structure by 20 cm. You can also install the structure perpendicular to the wall, for example, at the head of the bed, making it completely transparent, equipping all the space of the reptile house with branches, snags or tropical plants of the corresponding size. Making such a terrarium, which is placed on a blank wall of the house, you decorate its back wall with artificial rocks.
The terrarium in the corridor is usually installed at the hanger or at the door to the living room, since this space is rarely used. Here you can place a terrarium of any width and length.
The use of furniture with a built-in terrarium allows you to have a complex of decorative, collection, quarantine, growing dwellings for reptiles that do not occupy much of the living space of the apartment. Such designs are easy to make yourself.
