It makes everyone laugh
Because not in a hurry.
But where
Hurry to
Who is always at home?

Even small children know that turtles carry their own shell-house, however, besides this, turtles need a dwelling that will imitate natural conditions, as well as a hole where the turtle will hide. “Why do turtles need a home if it crawls well on the floor and sleeps in winter under a battery?” The turtle on the floor can meet the owners in the evenings after work, bask in the sun, and also know where its feeder is. And in winter it is not visible. it will hide under the sideboard or under the battery and sleeps all winter. No hassle! And if she died in 5-10 years. because the old one has become. ” Yes, unfortunately, many Russians think so, but this point of view dates back to the Soviet era, when exotic reptiles only began to appear in zoos and few knew how to properly keep such animals. Parents passed on their “knowledge” on keeping animals to children, and they, in turn, told their parents that there was no more unpretentious animal than a turtle.

What is bad floor content? You can step on the turtle, put a chair on it or it can fall out of the unglazed balcony, the turtle on the floor can eat things that are inedible for it. On the floor, the turtle is constantly freezing, as in nature it is used to living at 25-30 ° C with temperature changes at night, its food is poorly digested, calcium is not absorbed, because of which its carapace becomes soft and crooked, and the legs break. And hibernation under the battery affects the kidneys badly, as a result of which the turtle dies from kidney failure after 5-8 years, instead of living 40-60 years.

So what does a turtle need? The tortoise’s dwelling (otherwise called a terrarium) should imitate the natural habitats of this type of turtles. For terrestrial Central Asian turtles, these are arid semi-deserts, for red-footed turtles, these are humid tropics, for American red-eared turtles, they are a reservoir with snags or stones where they dry and warm. The turtle house should be spacious enough. For one individual, up to 15-18 cm in size, 80-100 liters should be allocated, for 2. 120-150 liters or more. It is better if the terrarium is made of glass, but plastic containers are also suitable. In any case, it should be horizontal, that is, its width (approximately 60-100 cm) is greater than the height and width (50-70 cm). There must be ventilation openings in the terrarium, and other pets should not have access to it. Natural conditions will be simulated by special equipment for terrarium and aquarium animals.

Incandescent and UV. Both of these lamps should be located at a height of 20-40 cm from the tortoise shell and shine for 10-12 hours in the afternoon. An incandescent lamp (it is better to use a 40-watt mirror) imitates solar heat so that turtles can digest food, and an ultraviolet lamp for reptiles (for example, Hagen ReptyGlo, Sylvania ReptiStar, Zoomed ReptiSun) imitates ultraviolet solar radiation, which helps to absorb calcium, which makes the shell grow smooth and solid. An ultraviolet lamp should be taken with 4-5% UVB (5.0) radiation for aquatic turtles and 10% UVB (10.0) for land turtles and changed once every six months. Read more about lamps in the previous issue of the newspaper My Zoomir.

Priming. For water turtles, the soil can not be used, but for land turtles it is better to choose wood chips, large rolled pebbles or sawdust. Soil is needed so that the land turtle can fulfill its need for digging and grind its claws.

Thermometer. To be sure that the turtle is warm and comfortable in the terrarium, you should periodically check the thermometer. The temperature for most turtles should be in the range of 25-30 ° C. You can control the temperature by turning off the lamps in the heat or by installing lamps at 60 watts instead of 40 watts.

Lodge (terrarium). A house or other shelter is necessary for land turtles to hide from the light of lamps and sleep in the shade. In nature, turtles find burrows of other animals or burrow into the grass, hide under bushes. You can make a house from half a flower pot or by expanding the entrance to a wooden house for hamsters. For water turtles, a house is not necessary, but they will be happy to be able to hide under snags or between large stones.

Pond (terrarium). In aquatic turtles, the entire aquarium will be a body of water, and for land turtles it is needed only for tropical (red-legged, radiant, star-turtles) and secondarily terrestrial species (leaf, forest turtles, etc.). Steppe Central Asian turtles have enough bathing 1-2 times a week in a bath with warm water for an hour.

Filter (aquarium). It is necessary for water purification in the aquaterrarium of aquatic turtles. It is up to you to decide whether to choose internal or external, but the filter must cope with a volume of water 2-3 times larger than that poured into the aquarium.
